As summer heats up and we get closer to the end of the year, many of us are starting to prepare for a Southern Hemisphere Christmas. While it may not be marked by snowfall or cooler temperatures, we have our own unique way of decorating our homes during the festive season. And regardless of the size of your budget, there are plenty of inexpensive ways you can transform any room to celebrate the festive season.

Candles and table runners

Potentially the easiest way to mark the occasion at the table, not only does a runner keep the hot ham tray from damaging its surface but it keeps any stray candle wax away too. They’re available in all lengths so you can be sure to find one that fits any table.

When it comes to finding candles to go on top there are all kinds of scents to liven your mood. Pine is a classic Christmas fragrance that’s perfect for people who can only put up artificial trees due to allergies, but other scents like cinnamon or even sandalwood can create an atmosphere in your home or at the bach.

Blankets

Easy to throw over the couch or your favourite chair, a festive blanket takes up enough room to complement your tree or any other decorations but they’re simple to fold smaller if you need to. When you’re away at the bach or need something to keep you warm at the beach when the sun is setting, they can also be just what you need.

Pohutakawa tree

The quintessential New Zealand Christmas tree, Pohutakawa seedlings don’t need to be grown into 12 metre high trees to flower or look great in your home. Seedlings are cheap, and if you prune them throughout the year it’s possible to maintain and control their shape as you would a bonsai. Keep them small enough to sit on a table runner or large enough to fill a small pot, the choice is yours.

Cushions

Easy to pull out during the festive season, a few extra cushions dotted around your home are a great way to complement any other decorations you have up. When you’re out at the beach or the on the backyard and want a little extra comfort on your folding chair, they can be just what you need.

When it comes to getting everything together in time, it’s important to plan ahead and make a list to budget everything. The last you want is an unexpected surprise, which is why we’ve made the perfect spreadsheet to help you.
