In short

What you’ll pay depends mostly on the fabric and lining you choose, but as a guide — based on a $39.95 fabric with a $9.95 Poly blockout lining — around 10 windows starts from about $2,580 for blinds only, $5,975 for curtains only, or $7,860 for curtains and sunscreens. Good, well-lined curtains and blinds also pay you back over time by insulating your home and lowering your power bills, so it’s worth weighing the long-term savings alongside the upfront cost.

What does it cost to not have good curtains and blinds?

There’s actually a sub question to this which is, ‘How much extra could it cost to not have good curtains and blinds?’ Let’s touch on that first…

You can reduce your carbon footprint and save money on those power bills by stopping cold air from travelling into your home and preventing warm air escaping through the windows with good window treatments.

Curtains and drapes are great insulators. To maximise their effectiveness we recommend lined drapes and curtains be floor length. Seeing as warm air rises the floor is the coldest point in the room so having the curtains or drapes touching or puddling the fabric on the floor stops cold air from seeping into the room.

Having properly lined drapes is also a must. Not only does the lining increase the thermal effectiveness by adding a second layer of fabric, they also fall and hang softer than coated or triple weave fabrics.

Further advantages to good lining include:

  • Noise reduction

  • Room darkening

  • Light filtration

Adding in a 100% polyester lining protects your drapes, your carpet and your furniture from the sun’s harsh rays, making them look better and last longer. Team that up with a sunscreen roller blind to help filter sunlight and keep your home cooler in summertime.

Frequently asked questions

How much do curtains and blinds cost for a whole home?

As a guide, based on a $39.95 fabric with a $9.95 Poly blockout lining, around 10 windows starts from about $2,580 for blinds only, $5,975 for curtains only, or $7,860 for curtains and sunscreens. A larger home of around 12 windows starts from about $3,180, $6,995 and $9,750 respectively.

What affects the price of curtains and blinds?

The biggest factor is the fabric you choose, followed by the lining and the type of window treatment. The figures above are based on an entry-level fabric and lining, so your final price will move up or down depending on the fabrics that catch your eye.

Can good curtains and blinds save me money?

Yes. Well-lined, floor-length curtains are great insulators — they help stop cold air seeping in and warm air escaping through your windows, which can reduce your power bills over time. So the upfront cost is partly offset by ongoing savings.

Is lining worth the extra cost?

We think so. A good lining adds thermal performance, helps with noise reduction, room darkening and light filtration, and protects your fabric, carpet and furniture from the sun so everything looks better and lasts longer. Your local Russells consultant can recommend the right lining for each room.
