In short

There are three main types of shutter. PVC shutters are moisture-proof and VOC-free, ideal for bathrooms, kitchens and sunny windows. Aluminium shutters are lockable, can be cyclone-rated, and are the one type you can install outside on a patio or balcony. Wood shutters bring natural warmth and excellent insulation, suiting bedrooms and living spaces. All three offer privacy, insulation, airflow and light control, and are very child-safe with no cords.

Whether you are renovating or styling a new home, window shutters are a practical, attractive alternative to curtains and blinds that instantly elevate a space and add value. They suit any room, are simple to clean, and offer privacy, insulation, airflow, and light and noise control in one. Here are the three kinds we offer and what each does best.

Table of contents

PVC shutters

Best for moisture-prone and sunny rooms. Our PVC shutters are VOC-free and, because they are not made from wood, they are unaffected by moisture or humidity, which makes them perfect for bathrooms and kitchens. They will not warp on sun-facing windows either. With different hinge options, slat sizes and over a dozen colours, you can tailor how they look and work.

Aluminium shutters

The one type you can install outside. Aluminium shutters work on a patio, balcony or veranda to control light and block wind, and can be lockable and made from cyclone-rated materials for security in any location. They also look stylish inside, especially in a modern bathroom.

Wood shutters

Best for warmth and a natural, luxurious look. Wood, or timber shutters have brought warmth and luxury into homes for centuries, and that cosiness makes them a great choice for bedrooms and living spaces. They insulate effectively in summer and winter and, like the others, come in a range of sizes and control options. Our wood shutters are made from high-quality basswood, sustainably sourced from premium plantations, in over 20 colour and stain options.

Frequently asked questions

Are PVC shutters any good?

Yes. PVC shutters are ideal in humid rooms like bathrooms and kitchens. They are durable, easy to clean, VOC-free and come in a range of colours, making them an affordable, low-maintenance option.

Can shutters be installed outside?

Aluminium shutters can. They are made for external use on patios, balconies and verandas to control light and block wind, and can be lockable and cyclone-rated for security. PVC and wood shutters are for interior use.

Are aluminium shutters waterproof?

Aluminium does not absorb water or humidity and is fireproof, which makes it great for bathrooms and kitchens. It will not, however, keep rain out of your home.

How do you clean aluminium shutters?

Wipe them down regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust. For tougher build-up, use warm water and a gentle detergent, then dry off any excess water with a clean cloth.

What are wooden window shutters called?

Wooden shutters are often called plantation shutters. Wood is the traditional material, but plantation-style shutters can also be made from PVC or aluminium.
