Will dim out blinds make a room completely dark?

No. Dim out blinds darken a room significantly but do not block light entirely, and with any blind some light comes in around the edges where the fabric meets the frame. If total darkness matters, your consultant may recommend a blockout fabric, a layered setup, or pairing with curtains.

Frequently asked questions

What are dim out blinds?

Dim out blinds use a densely woven fabric that blocks most light and darkens a room, without eliminating light completely. They sit between a light-filtering blind and a full blockout blind.

What is the difference between dim out and blockout blinds?

Dim out fabric reduces light significantly but lets a little through, while blockout fabric is designed to stop light passing through the material. With both, some light still enters around the edges of the blind.

Do dim out blinds block all light?

No. Dim out blinds darken a room considerably but do not achieve total blackout. For the darkest possible result, your consultant may recommend a blockout fabric or pairing the blind with curtains.

Are dim out blinds good for bedrooms?

Yes. Dim out is a popular bedroom choice for a darker, more restful room with a clean finish. If you want maximum darkness, your consultant can advise on blockout or a layered option.

Why does light come in around the sides of my blind?

All blinds sit slightly inside or in front of the window, so a small gap between the fabric and the frame is normal and lets in some light. Fitting the blind outside the recess, or adding curtains, reduces this. Your consultant will advise on the best fit for each window.

Are dim out roller blinds good for a nursery?

They work well for daytime naps and general darkening. For sleep training where the room needs to be very dark, a blockout fabric or a blind paired with curtains will give a stronger result.

Can dim out blinds help keep a room warmer?

Dim out fabric offers some insulation, though a honeycomb blind holds heat far better thanks to its air-pocket structure. Your consultant will recommend the best option if warmth is a priority.

Can blinds be made child and pet safe?

Yes — there are a few easy ways. Any of our chain-controlled blinds can have a chain tensioner added for child and pet safety, at no extra cost. Prefer to do away with cords and chains completely? Motorising your blinds removes them altogether, and several of our ranges also come with a cordless option. Just tell your consultant it’s a priority and we’ll point you to the safest choice for your home.
