What thermal blinds are best for.

Up to 30% of a room's heat can be lost through glass. Thermal blinds create a layer of insulation at the window that slows this heat transfer, making a measurable difference to how warm a room feels and how much heating is required.

Thermal blinds work in both directions, slowing heat gain through glass on hot days as well as retaining warmth in winter. They are particularly effective on north- and west-facing windows that receive strong afternoon sun in NZ.

A thermal blockout blind in the bedroom maintains a more consistent temperature overnight, which can improve sleep quality. Honeycomb blinds in a blockout opacity are a popular choice for this reason.

Thermal blinds are a passive solution with no running costs. Compared to the ongoing cost of heating a poorly insulated room, the investment in thermal blinds can pay for itself over time.

Frequently asked questions

Do thermal blinds really make a difference?

Yes, when fitted correctly. Thermal blinds create a layer of insulation at the window that slows heat transfer in both directions, retaining warmth in winter and reducing heat gain in summer. Research shows up to 30% of a room's heat can be lost through glass, and thermal blinds address this directly.

What is the best thermal blind for NZ homes?

Honeycomb blinds are considered the most thermally effective blind type because their cellular structure traps air in pockets against the window. Roman blinds with thermal or blockout lining are also a strong option. For roller blinds, a thermal-coated fabric improves performance over a standard fabric. Your local consultant will advise on the right option for your rooms.

Are thermal blinds worth it?

For rooms that are consistently cold in winter or hot in summer, yes. Thermal blinds are a one-off investment with no ongoing running costs. Whether they are worth it for your specific home depends on your window sizes, glazing, and how cold your rooms get. Your consultant can give you an honest assessment.

Are thermal blinds good for summer too?

Yes. The same insulating properties that retain heat in winter also slow heat gain through glass in summer. This makes thermal blinds a year-round benefit, particularly for north- and west-facing rooms in NZ that receive strong afternoon sun.

Do thermal blinds work better than curtains?

Both can be effective, and they can also be used together. Thermal blinds that fit snugly inside the window recess create a tighter seal against heat loss. Thermal curtains that reach the floor and extend past the frame on each side can also be highly effective. Your consultant can advise on the best solution, or combination, for your home.

What is the difference between thermal and blockout blinds?

A blockout blind is designed to prevent light transmission. A thermal blind is designed to reduce heat transfer through the window. Some blinds, such as a roller blind with the correct fabric and lining or a thermal-lined roman blind, deliver both functions simultaneously. Your consultant will help you choose the right option for each room.

Can thermal blinds reduce my heating costs?

Over time, yes. By reducing heat loss through windows, thermal blinds reduce the load on your heating system. The extent of the saving depends on your home's insulation, window size, glazing type, and how consistently the blinds are used. Your local consultant will give you a realistic view of what to expect.

Can blinds be made child and pet safe?

Yes — there are a few easy ways. Any of our chain-controlled blinds can have a chain tensioner added for child and pet safety, at no extra cost. Prefer to do away with cords and chains completely? Motorising your blinds removes them altogether, and several of our ranges also come with a cordless option. Just tell your consultant it’s a priority and we’ll point you to the safest choice for your home.
