What triple weave curtains are best for.
Triple weave fabrics have a beautiful, soft finish and a natural drape that suits bedrooms particularly well, combining the look of a premium curtain with practical light and insulation performance.
Triple weave dims the room and reduces glare without eliminating light entirely, making it a better fit for living spaces than a full blockout curtain.
Used as a lining rather than a face fabric, triple weave adds meaningful insulation and light-dimming properties to a curtain whose primary role is decorative.
The three-layer construction adds mass to the curtain, which helps absorb sound and reduce the impact of traffic and street noise in rooms close to the road.

Is triple weave right for your home?
Triple weave sits between a light-filtering curtain and a full blockout in terms of light control. It is not the right choice if complete darkness is the goal. For that, a blockout-lined curtain will perform better. Your local consultant will explain the difference clearly and help you decide which option suits each room in your home.

Frequently asked questions
What is a triple weave curtain?
A triple weave curtain is made from three interwoven layers of fabric, one of which is typically a black thread. This construction gives the fabric its light-dimming and insulating properties, as well as its characteristic soft finish and natural drape.
Is triple weave the same as blockout?
Not exactly. Triple weave curtains are typically rated as dim-out rather than full blockout, meaning they reduce light significantly but do not eliminate it entirely. Some triple weave fabrics do block up to 95% of light, but if complete darkness is the goal, a blockout-lined curtain is the more reliable choice. Your local consultant will explain the difference.
What is the difference between blockout and triple weave curtains?
Blockout curtains use a lining specifically designed to prevent light from passing through the fabric. Triple weave achieves its light-dimming effect through the three-layer fabric construction itself, without requiring a separate lining. Triple weave generally has a softer, more elegant finish than a standard blockout-lined curtain.
Are triple weave curtains thermal?
Yes. The three-layer construction adds insulating properties, helping to retain warmth in winter and reduce the effect of direct sun in summer. For maximum thermal performance, a separate thermal lining can also be added. Your consultant will advise on the right combination for your home.
Can you use triple weave as a curtain lining?
Yes. Triple weave is available both as a face fabric and as a lining that can be added to a different curtain fabric. Using it as a lining is a good option if you want the light-dimming and insulating benefits of triple weave without it being the primary fabric in the room.
Are triple weave curtains good for bedrooms?
Yes. Triple weave is one of the most popular choices for bedrooms in NZ because it combines a soft, premium look with practical light-dimming and insulating performance. For rooms where complete darkness is needed, your consultant may also recommend a full blockout option.
Can triple weave curtains be custom-made in NZ?
Yes. All Russells triple weave curtains are custom-made to your exact measurements in our Nelson workroom, backed by our Guaranteed Perfect Fit.
How do I choose between triple weave and blockout curtains?
The main question is how much light control you need. If the goal is a darker, more comfortable room with a beautiful finish, but occasional ambient light is acceptable, triple weave is often the better choice. If complete darkness is essential, such as for a young child's bedroom or a media room, a full blockout curtain is more reliable. Your consultant will help you decide during the in-home visit.
Are curtains a good choice if we've got kids or pets?
They're one of the safest choices you can make. Curtains don't need cords or chains to work, so there's nothing dangling for little hands or curious paws. We'd steer you away from cord controls — and if you'd rather not draw them by hand (which can mark the fabric over time), a wand or automation keeps things easy and safe. Just ask and we'll talk you through it.
