What blockout blinds are best for.
Blockout blinds are the most effective way to eliminate early morning light, making them ideal for shift workers, young children, and anyone sensitive to light while sleeping.
Full light blocking removes screen glare and gives you reliable control over light levels throughout the day.
When paired with a thermal or honeycomb blind, blockout fabrics also help reduce heat gain from north- and west-facing windows.
A blockout blind (roman or roller) on a dual track with sheer curtains gives you full light control at night and filtered light during the day.

Not sure if blockout is right for your space?
Blockout blinds perform best when measured and fitted correctly. Gaps at the sides or base of the frame are the most common cause of light bleed, and no fabric, however opaque, will compensate for a poor fit. Your consultant will assess your windows, advise on mount type and fitting method, and tell you if a different solution would serve your room better.

Frequently asked questions
Do blockout blinds actually block all light?
A quality blockout fabric will block virtually all light through the material itself. The key variable is fit: gaps around the frame, at the base, or along the sides will allow light in, regardless of the fabric. Your local consultant will assess your windows and recommend the right mount type and fitting method to minimise light bleed.
What is the difference between blockout, blackout, and dim-out blinds?
These terms are often used interchangeably, though they describe different levels of opacity. Blockout and blackout both refer to fully opaque fabrics that prevent light transmission. Dim-out, or light-filtering, reduces light significantly but does not eliminate it. If full darkness is the goal, a blockout fabric is the right choice.
Which rooms are blockout blinds best suited for?
Bedrooms are the most common application, particularly for shift workers, young children, and anyone sensitive to early morning light. Media rooms, home offices, and any north- or west-facing room that receives strong afternoon sun in NZ are also well suited to blockout blinds.
Can blockout blinds help with heat and insulation?
Blockout fabrics reduce light, but their thermal performance depends on the specific material. For rooms where heat retention or heat reduction is the priority, your consultant may recommend pairing a blockout blind with a honeycomb or thermal blind, or selecting a fabric with added thermal properties.
Are blockout blinds good for a living room?
Yes, particularly for rooms with screens or strong afternoon sun. Many NZ homeowners pair a blockout roller blind with sheer curtains on a dual track, which allows soft filtered light during the day and complete privacy and darkness when needed. Your consultant can show you how this combination works in practice.
How do I clean blockout roller blinds?
Most blockout roller blinds can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking the fabric or using abrasive cleaners, which can damage the blockout coating. Your consultant will provide care guidance specific to the fabric you choose.
Can I motorise blockout blinds?
Yes. Motorisation is available across the blockout roller blind range and is a popular option for bedrooms, where operating blinds without getting out of bed is a practical benefit. It is also the safest option for homes with young children, as it eliminates exposed cords. Your consultant can walk you through motorisation options during your in-home visit.
Can blockout blinds be used in a bathroom or laundry?
Blockout roller blinds can work in bathrooms and laundries, but moisture resistance is as important as light control in these rooms. Your consultant will advise on whether a water-resistant blockout option is appropriate for your space.
Can blinds be made child and pet safe?
Yes — there are a few easy ways. Any of our chain-controlled blinds can have a chain tensioner added for child and pet safety, at no extra cost. Prefer to do away with cords and chains completely? Motorising your blinds removes them altogether, and several of our ranges also come with a cordless option. Just tell your consultant it’s a priority and we’ll point you to the safest choice for your home.
