What venetian blinds are best for.
Tilting the slats lets you direct light exactly where you want it and adjust privacy levels without raising or lowering the blind. No other common blind type offers this level of daily control.
Aluminium and PVC venetians are moisture-resistant, easy to wipe clean, and will not warp or rust, making them the most practical choice for wet and humid rooms
The ability to tilt slats rather than raise or lower the blind entirely makes venetians well suited to offices and home studies, where you want to manage glare on a screen without losing privacy.
Wide-slat timber venetians can create a shutter-like aesthetic in traditional interiors. Narrow-slat aluminium venetians suit clean-lined, contemporary spaces. Your local consultant will show you how slat width and material change the overall look.

Are venetian blinds right for your home?
Venetian blinds provide strong light control and are one of the most practical blind options available, but dust settles on the slats, and regular wiping is required to maintain their appearance. Timber venetians should not be used in bathrooms or laundries where moisture is persistent. Your consultant will guide you on which material is right for each room in your home.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best types of venetian blinds?
It depends on the room. Aluminium or PVC venetians are the most practical for kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries due to their moisture resistance. Timber venetians add natural warmth and work well in living areas and bedrooms with good ventilation. Faux-wood venetians offer the look of timber with greater durability and moisture resistance. Your consultant will advise on the right material for each room.
Do venetian blinds look outdated?
Not in the right material and slat width. Narrow aluminium venetians suit contemporary homes well. Wide-slat timber venetians in a living area or bedroom can look considered and intentional rather than dated. Your consultant can show you how different options read in the context of your interior.
What is the downside of venetian blinds?
Venetian blinds collect dust on the slats and require regular wiping to maintain their appearance. Timber venetians are not suitable for high-humidity rooms. They also provide less insulation than a fabric roman blind or honeycomb blind. Your consultant will give you a balanced view of the options.
Do venetian blinds block out heat?
Venetian blinds reduce solar heat gain when the slats are closed, particularly with a reflective aluminium fabric. They are not as thermally effective as a fabric Roman blind or honeycomb blind, but they provide reasonable heat control in rooms where moisture resistance or easy cleaning is also a priority.
Should venetian blinds face up or down?
This refers to the direction of the slat tilt. Slats tilted downward (concave side facing out) provide more privacy from outside while still admitting light from above. Slats tilted upward reflect light toward the ceiling and can brighten a room. Your local consultant can demonstrate both positions during your in-home visit.
How long do venetian blinds last?
A quality custom-made venetian blind, properly maintained, can last many years. Aluminium venetians are particularly durable. Timber venetians last well in dry conditions but are vulnerable to warping in persistent moisture. Faux-wood venetians offer the best longevity in humid environments.
Are wooden venetian blinds good for bathrooms?
No. Timber absorbs moisture and will eventually warp or crack in a consistently humid environment. Even in bathrooms with good ventilation, the daily humidity from showering is enough to cause damage over time. Faux-wood venetians are the right alternative: they look similar but are made from moisture-resistant polyresin.

Are Venetian blinds okay if we have children or pets?
Worth knowing up front: our Venetian blinds only come with cord controls, so do keep that in mind if safety's a factor for you. They can still work well in a home with kids or pets — just fit them to windows up high, keep the cords as short as possible, and wrap them in an 'O' around the cleat so they're stored safely out of reach.
Do you do repairs?
Yes, we repair curtains and blinds, but only products that were originally bought through Russells. Depending on your region and installer availability, some repairs can be done on-site or at a local lockup. More technical repairs and alterations come back to our factories in Nelson. If your product is still under warranty, the repair may be covered; if it's out of warranty, charges apply for the van call-out, installer time, parts, shipping, and factory labour. Get in touch and we'll talk you through it.
Do you make insect screens?
No. We specialise in interior window furnishings like curtains, blinds and shutters. Insect screens are not currently part of our range.
Do you clean curtains and blinds?
We don't offer a cleaning service for curtains or blinds. We also don't recommend washing any of our curtains, not even dry cleaning; spot cleaning is best. For the full details, take a look at our Product Care Guide.
