What works best in a kitchen.
A roller blind with a PVC or coated fabric wipes down easily and handles the light steam and cooking residue common near kitchen windows. Clean lines and a compact roll make it one of the most practical kitchen choices.
Aluminium or PVC venetians are non-porous, easy to wipe clean, and allow precise adjustment of light and privacy. They are well suited to kitchen windows in any position and will not warp or deteriorate from steam exposure.
Where the warmth of a timber look is preferred, faux-wood venetians offer the aesthetic of real wood with the moisture resistance required in a kitchen. They will not warp, swell, or crack.
For kitchen windows that receive strong NZ afternoon sun, a sunscreen blind reduces glare and UV exposure without cutting out natural light. It protects benchtops and flooring from fading while keeping the space bright.

What blinds are best for your kitchen?
Roman blinds and standard fabric roller blinds are not well suited to kitchen windows near the cooktop or sink. Real timber venetians are also unsuitable near a sink or in a kitchen with high humidity. Your consultant will be able to talk through which products will be best for your kitchen.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best blinds for a kitchen?
Roller blinds with a wipe-clean or PVC-coated fabric and PVC or aluminium venetians are the most practical kitchen choices in NZ. Both handle steam and cooking residue well, are easy to clean, and are available in a wide range of colours and styles. Your consultant will assess each window's position and exposure before making a specific recommendation.
Are roller blinds good for kitchens?
Yes, if you choose the right fabric. A roller blind with a wipeable or moisture-resistant coating is practical, easy to maintain, and suits the clean aesthetic of most contemporary NZ kitchens. Standard fabric roller blinds near the cooktop or sink will absorb steam and grease over time. Your local consultant will confirm which fabrics are kitchen-appropriate.
Can you put roman blinds in a kitchen?
Roman blinds are not recommended for windows directly above or near the cooktop or sink. The fabric absorbs steam, grease, and cooking odours, and most roman blind fabrics are not easy to clean. In a kitchen dining area away from direct steam exposure, a roman blind can work. Your consultant will assess the window position and advise.
How do I clean kitchen blinds?
Aluminium and PVC venetians and PVC-coated roller blinds can be wiped down with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Regular wiping prevents the build-up of cooking residue and grease. Your consultant will provide specific care guidance for the product and fabric you choose.
What blinds are best over a kitchen sink?
A waterproof or PVC-coated roller blind or an aluminium or PVC venetian is the best choice for a window directly above a kitchen sink. Both handle water and steam exposure well, are easy to wipe down, and can be operated easily with wet or damp hands.
Are wooden blinds good for a kitchen?
Real timber venetians are not recommended for kitchen windows near the cooktop or sink, where steam and moisture are consistent. Faux-wood venetians offer the same aesthetic with full moisture resistance and are the right alternative for a kitchen where a timber look is preferred.
Do sunscreen blinds work well in a kitchen?
Yes, particularly for north- or west-facing kitchen windows that receive strong afternoon sun. A sunscreen blind reduces glare on benchtops and screens, protects surfaces from UV damage, and maintains a bright, open feel. For windows near the cooktop or sink, a wipe-clean fabric in a sunscreen is preferable to a standard sunscreen fabric.
Can I use the same blind in my kitchen and dining area?
In open-plan kitchen and dining spaces, using a consistent blind across the windows creates a unified look. Your consultant will assess which blind type suits both the practical demands of the kitchen windows and the aesthetic of the dining area and advise on whether a single product works across both or whether different solutions are better for different windows.
Can blinds be made child and pet safe?
Yes — there are a few easy ways. Any of our chain-controlled blinds can have a chain tensioner added for child and pet safety, at no extra cost. Prefer to do away with cords and chains completely? Motorising your blinds removes them altogether, and several of our ranges also come with a cordless option. Just tell your consultant it’s a priority and we’ll point you to the safest choice for your home.
