What roller blinds are best for.
Roller blinds are one of the most versatile window coverings available, well-suited to bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices. The key is choosing the right fabric for each room's function.
A roller blind rolls up into a compact tube above the window when raised, leaving the glass almost entirely clear. This suits modern and minimalist interiors where the view or the window itself is a feature.
Roller blinds take up minimal space compared to curtains or slatted blinds, making them a practical choice for narrow windows, small rooms, and windows near furniture.
A roller blind combined with a sheer or blockout curtain gives you the practicality of a blind with the warmth and texture of a fabric treatment. Your local consultant can show you how this works in your specific space.

Choosing the right roller blind for your home.
The main decision with roller blinds is fabric: blockout for full darkness, light filtering for softened natural light with daytime privacy, or sunscreen for glare reduction while retaining the view. Your local consultant will help you make the right choice for every window.

Frequently asked questions
What type of roller blinds are best?
It depends on the room and how you use it. Blockout is best for bedrooms and media rooms. Light-filtering suits living areas where you want softened natural light with daytime privacy. Sunscreen is best for windows with a view you want to keep, or where glare reduction is the priority. Your consultant will help you choose the right fabric for each window.
Are roller blinds good for bedrooms?
Yes, particularly in a blockout fabric. A well-fitted blockout roller blind is one of the most effective ways to achieve full darkness in a bedroom. For added style and thermal benefit, many homeowners pair a roller with curtains on a separate track.
What colour roller blinds are best?
Neutral tones, whites, and light greys are the most popular choice for NZ homes, as they suit a wide range of interiors and reflect light well. Darker fabrics are particularly effective in blockout applications. Your local consultant will bring samples and help you find the right colour for your space.
Are roller blinds better inside or outside the frame?
An inside mount offers the cleanest look but requires adequate recess depth. An outside mount is more flexible and can make a window appear larger. For blockout applications, a back-roll and outside or close-to-frame mount minimises light bleed. Your consultant will assess each window and advise accordingly.
What is the life expectancy of roller blinds?
A quality custom-made roller blind, well maintained, can last many years. Longevity depends on fabric type, UV exposure, and how frequently the blind is operated. Your consultant will advise on the care requirements for the fabric you choose.
Do roller blinds provide privacy?
It depends on the fabric. Light-filtering fabrics provide daytime privacy but allow visibility from outside once interior lights are on at night. Blockout fabrics provide complete privacy at all times. Sunscreen fabrics offer partial privacy by obscuring the view without fully blocking light. Your local consultant will explain what each option provides in your specific rooms.
What is the difference between roller blinds and roller shades?
These terms are used interchangeably in NZ. Both refer to a flat fabric that rolls up around a tube at the top of the window. The terminology differs by region but the product is the same.

What are our options for child- and pet-safe roller blinds?
Plenty. Any of our chain-controlled roller blinds can have a chain tensioner added for peace of mind — and that’s on us, no extra cost. Prefer to go cord- and chain-free? Choose our cordless ‘Zero Gravity’ control, or motorise them. Either way, there’s nothing hanging within reach.
Do you do repairs?
Yes, we repair curtains and blinds, but only products that were originally bought through Russells. Depending on your region and installer availability, some repairs can be done on-site or at a local lockup. More technical repairs and alterations come back to our factories in Nelson. If your product is still under warranty, the repair may be covered; if it's out of warranty, charges apply for the van call-out, installer time, parts, shipping, and factory labour. Get in touch and we'll talk you through it.
Do you make insect screens?
No. We specialise in interior window furnishings like curtains, blinds and shutters. Insect screens are not currently part of our range.
Do you clean curtains and blinds?
We don't offer a cleaning service for curtains or blinds. We also don't recommend washing any of our curtains, not even dry cleaning; spot cleaning is best. For the full details, take a look at our Product Care Guide.
