Choosing the perfect blinds for your bedroom

In short
In a bedroom, light control and privacy usually come first, so a blockout roller blind or a snugly fitted, lined roman blind are the best starting points. Minimise light gaps with an outside fit, a back-rolled roller and fascia, or pair a blockout blind with a sheer. Keep colours calm for good sleep, choose cordless or well-secured cords for child safety, and match the operation to your window style.
The huge variety of blinds available means very different looks are possible in a bedroom, but looks are just one factor. Here is our advice on style, colour, light control, noise, safety and operation, so you can choose the best blinds for your bedroom. For a quick comparison across the whole house, see our guide on which blinds suit which rooms.

What style do you prefer?
Start with the look you love. Venetian and vertical blinds give clean lines, shutters take that further, roller blinds are streamlined and contemporary, a classic fabric roman adds softness, and honeycomb blinds offer a mix of soft and streamlined.
Colour and pattern
A bedroom needs to feel calm to promote relaxation and good sleep, so avoid overly bold or bright colours and patterns. As bedrooms are often shared, aim for something that suits both of your tastes, and remember your bedding changes, so choose a blind that complements your whole suite of covers.
Privacy and light control
Because bedrooms are for sleeping, blocking light is usually the priority. A blockout roller blind or a snugly fitted, lined roman is the best starting point, especially for children or anyone sensitive to light. The trick is minimising the light gaps:
Roman blinds have side gaps, so fit them outside the frame and go wider and longer than the window.
An inside-mounted roller leaves small gaps, so choose a back-rolled blind fitted outside the frame, and hide the tube with a fascia for a clean line.
Dual roller blinds (blockout plus sunscreen), or a blockout roller paired with a sheer curtain, give privacy and light by day and darkness at night.
Honeycomb blinds are available as a blockout-and-translucent combo.
Noise reduction
Blinds can reduce noise a little but cannot block it completely, as they are made from hard or thin materials that do not absorb much sound. Our honeycomb blinds help most. If a quieter bedroom is a priority, read our guide on soundproofing bedrooms.
Safety, operation and materials
If children may use the room, be very wary of blind cords. A cordless option like our Zero Gravity roller is child-safe; if your blind is corded, wind it tightly around a cleat out of reach and add a tensioner to keep cords and chains tidy and stop them flapping at an open window.
Match the operation to your window: top-hinged windows suit any blind that raises to open, while side-hinged windows and sliding or French doors are easier with a vertical that draws across. Finally, if you have allergies, hard-material blinds attract less dust than fabric and are easy to clean, and in a sunny room aluminium venetians can reflect excess heat inside, so weigh that up.

Frequently asked questions
What blinds are best for a bedroom?
Light control usually comes first, so a blockout roller blind or a snugly fitted, lined roman blind are top choices. Honeycomb blinds with a blockout and translucent combo, and vertical blinds for easy adjustment, also work well.
How do you block out light with bedroom blinds?
Use a blockout fabric and minimise the light gaps around the edges. Fit the blind outside the frame, going wider and longer than the window, choose a back-rolled roller with a fascia to close the gap, or pair a blockout blind with a sheer curtain for privacy by day and darkness at night.
Can blinds reduce noise in a bedroom?
Blinds can reduce noise a little but cannot block it out completely, as they are made from hard or thin materials that do not absorb much sound. Honeycomb blinds help most. For a quieter room overall, see our guide on soundproofing bedrooms.
What are the safest blinds for a child's bedroom?
Cordless blinds, like a Zero Gravity roller, are the safest as they remove the cord hazard entirely. If your blind is corded, wind the cord tightly around a cleat out of reach and use a tensioner to keep chains tidy.
