Decorating your bedroom on a budget

In short
You can refresh a bedroom without a big spend. The biggest, cheapest wins are fresh bedding for colour and texture, a single feature wall in paint or wallpaper, some affordable art, and mood lighting like LED strips or fairy lights. Updating your curtains or blinds, especially blockouts paired with sheers, then lifts both the look and the comfort of the room.
On average we spend at least 25 years of our lives in our bedrooms, and that is just the time we are asleep. Many of us also love to curl up to relax, watch a movie or read, so it makes sense for your room to be somewhere you enjoy spending time. Decorating it is a great way to reflect your style, and it does not have to cost a fortune. Here are some simple, affordable ways to redecorate.
Table of contents
New bedding
Your bed is probably the largest object in the room, so without repainting, new bedding is a great way to add texture and colour while upping the comfort factor. Duvet covers, pillowslips and cushions come in plenty of colours and are affordable, and faux mink blankets feel plush and luxurious without the luxury price tag.
Get some colour up
Painting all four walls is one option, but there are easier ways to introduce colour. Create a feature wall with a splash of paint or wallpaper. Hanging art is another simple change: shop around for cheap prints online, look at gift shops (a single sheet of patterned gift wrap is sometimes a whole print, not a repeat), or get your own photos professionally printed and framed for less than you would think. Best of all, art is not permanent, so if your tastes change you simply hang something else.
Create a mood with lighting
Beyond the bedside lamps, playing with light creates different moods. LED strips are bright, inexpensive and come in a range of colours, as do fairy lights that need no extra installation. Your local art or design store may also have fun neon options or lights set in acrylic shapes, an easy way to add colour and personality.
New curtains or blinds
Curtains and blinds shape both the style and the function of your room. If you love to curl up with a movie in bed, blockout curtains or blinds can make it feel like the cinema. And if your windows can be seen into from the street or over the fence, pairing blockouts with sheers keeps privacy without having to change in the dark. Frequently asked questions
How can I decorate my bedroom cheaply?
Start with the biggest, lowest-cost wins: fresh bedding to add colour and texture, a single feature wall in paint or wallpaper, some affordable art, and mood lighting like LED strips or fairy lights. Updating curtains or blinds then lifts both the look and the comfort of the room.
What is the cheapest way to add colour to a bedroom?
You do not need to repaint all four walls. A feature wall in a splash of paint or wallpaper, plus hung art (cheap online prints, framed photos, even a single sheet of patterned gift wrap), adds colour for very little and is easy to change later.
Do curtains and blinds make a difference in a bedroom?
Yes, both stylistically and functionally. Blockout curtains or blinds darken the room for better sleep and a cinema-like feel for movies in bed, and pairing blockouts with sheers keeps privacy from the street while still letting you control light.
